Methodology
Data collection: We scan Shopify stores using headless browsers that analyze DOM structure, script tags, meta tags, and network requests. Each store is checked for 400+ known Shopify apps, 50+ tracking pixels, theme identification, and Shopify Plus indicators.
Store discovery:Stores are sourced from Shopify app store listings, public directories, third-party datasets, and organic discovery. The sample skews toward publicly-visible, active stores; password-protected, dev, and very new stores are underrepresented compared to Shopify's broader merchant base. Our current database covers about 20.2% of that benchmark.
Database scope: 1,112,231+ total stores in our database. App and pixel adoption rates are based on 1,111,501 stores with full snapshot data. Theme, traffic, store demographics, and social media stats use the full database.
Traffic estimates: Traffic tiers are derived from SimilarWeb data where available, supplemented by proxy signals like CDN asset patterns, product catalog size, and third-party enrichment sources. These are rough estimates, not direct analytics measurements.
Meta ads:The "stores running Meta ads" metric comes from the Meta Ad Library, which shows currently active ads. Stores that previously ran ads or use dark posts/custom audiences are not captured. The actual percentage of stores that advertise on Meta is likely higher.
Update frequency: Stores are re-scanned on a rolling basis. Aggregate stats on this page refresh daily via incremental static regeneration.
Limitations: Detection relies on client-side signals. Apps loaded server-side or via private APIs may not be detected. Store demographics (founding year, product catalog, pricing) and social media handles come from public information. Social media follower counts show medians because means are heavily skewed by a small number of large accounts. Product counts are similarly reported as medians for the same reason.
